11 Myrtle Court, Mount Nelson

Architect designed 'Nelson House'

This state of the art home on the upper slopes of Mt Nelson was designed by Crump Architects with a 'Commendation for a New House' in the 2017 Australian Institute of Architects Awards. Built around a central courtyard, creative use has been made of the available land to gain maximum sun and privacy, whilst incorporating the enticing views of the River Derwent.

A slatted timber entry and internal courtyard lead to the front door and foyer, where stairs rise to the main section of the house: the spacious living area with its warm polished floorboards the heart of the home. A well-designed kitchen with butler's pantry behind, plus a generous dining and sitting space, open onto a covered north-facing deck and river views. Floor to ceiling windows and sliding doors on the side of the living zone give access to a grassy courtyard around which the home is centred. The openness of the design allows for maximum natural light with a sense of indoor/outdoor living: ideal for both entertaining and relaxing. A landscaped garden on the far side of the courtyard gives privacy from neighbours, the leafiness enhancing the atmosphere.

The bedroom wing is softly carpeted and completes the southern side of the courtyard. The hallway and bathrooms are positioned along the rear wall whilst the bedrooms face onto the courtyard and enjoy the northern sun throughout the day. Two equal-sized bedrooms have built-in robes, as does the primary bedroom which includes a stylish en suite. The family bathroom, complete with bath and separate shower is conveniently positioned at the living-room end of the hallway. To the right of the entry foyer is a home office, fourth bedroom or media room, complete with a powder room; whilst on the other side of the foyer access to the double garage is ideal for wintery weather. The back yard is securely fenced and gated with space allocated to fresh vegetables and herbs, the remaining land having been landscaped with bushes and trees for both privacy and appeal.

Mt Nelson is one of Hobart's most popular bushland suburbs with Myrtle Court located in a quiet cul-de-sac. The Mt Nelson Store provides gourmet local service, the primary school and secondary college are within walking distance, the local oval and playground, along with the numerous bushwalking tracks offer outdoor activity, and the Signal Station Café is a popular destination. The suburb offers a peaceful, relaxed lifestyle with easy access to schools, work and recreation.
